Travel Award 2011

Congratulations to Ella Fung, winner of the Travel Award 2011. Read profiles of the three finalists below.

Ella is a second year Biological Natural Sciences undergraduate.  She would very much like to work in scientific research.  To this end she would like to take up a placement at the Ottowa Hospital Research Institute in Canada investigating the molecular and cellular mechanisms of chemoresistance in ovarian cancer.  This is the fifth most common cancer in women and despite advances in treatments remains the most lethal of gynaecological cancers.  Ella believes that not only is it an incredibly meaningful cause but it would also stretch her academic capabilities and enhance her career choices.

Sumiko is a second year Social & Political Sciences undergraduate.  She is a passionate supporter of nuclear non-proliferation and, having travelled with survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings on an educational tour, Sumiko would like to take up an internship at the James Martin Center of Non-Proliferation Studies, visit schools with Kathleen Sullivan (a disarmament educator) and interview atomic bomb survivors living in the US.  Sumiko is considering a career in policy research and hopes that her visit to the US will help her to decide her future direction.

Nelli is a first year PhD student in Management Studies at the Judge Business School.  She passionate about supporting women with environmental initiatives, promoting the development of renewable energy and fostering innovation.  Nelli would like to interview clean energy companies in California about how they develop and bring to market new technologies, facilitating cross-cultural comparisons with the UK and permitting her to understand better the procedures and capabilities that go into the development of new technologies that are revolutionizing how we generate electricity.  She would also like to meet with faculty members of UC Berkeley and Stanford University to identify potential research opportunities.
